about

I was AWOL from the army at the time. So jumped on plane over to the states. I was standing at one of the ridges overlooking the Grand Canyon with all the other tourists, when this family just stuck out like a sore thumb. They were loud and rude and didn't give a fuck. All the straight laced white picket fence owners were appalled! It was a big family and I got chatting to the oldest son, about my age. Over a couple of pints of this Native brewed beer, he told me his story. His predicament was that his girls' family could have been one of these stuck up pricks turning their nose up today. And he didn't know what he was gonna do...
On the Greyhound bus to Vegas next day I started writing Redneck Blues...

lyrics

At a night my girls Pa stays at home
Her Mumma would wear respectful clothes
They'd all go vacation in the country
Mumma would cook real nice grub
Then Pa would recite religious stuff and they'd all sit and eat around the table

Well I was brought up on a trailer park
We had a colour TV and lots of dogs
And we might spend one week a year down in Reno
See Papa, he was a rolling stone
Mumma would stay out all night long I'd get me a burger from the drive through

CHORUS
But Daddy's on death row
Mumma's on welfare
We just trying to figure out where it went wrong
Sister does blue movies
Brother does cocaine
We gotta join that family circle at the throne

Well my girls smart she went to school,
She can read and write and a whole lot more
She could go real far in this small town
They got seven cars, 6 are covered in dust
I got an old Ford truck and I don't know much
But one thing I do know is I love my girl

CHORUS

Well I was talking to her mother not but yesterday
She said the wedding date ain't so far away
We'd really like to meet up with your family
They can all come stay for a long weekend
The girls could bake cookies round of golf for the men
And all attend our church Sunday morning
Well the statement she made really took me back
I kinda went red and had a heart attack
I said STOP RIGHT THERE

Cause I gotta tell the truth...
I said Mumma, well I've been lying to you, cause my Mumma ain't gonna be the next black president of the United States,
See my papa's not working away on a children's orphanage in Alaska
And my little sister, she ain't a fuckin' Nun!
